چکیده

As the number of cores in a single chip increases, a typical implementation of coherence protocol adds significant hardware and complexity overhead. Besides, the performance of CMP system depends on the data access latency, which is highly affected by coherence protocol and on-chip interconnect. In this paper, we propose PPB (PhasePriority Based) cache coherence protocol, an optimization of modern directory coherence protocol. We take advantage of the observation that transient states occur in directory coherence protocol, resulting in some unnecessary transient states and stalling. PPB cache coherence protocol decouples a coherence transaction and introduces the idea of “phase” message. This phase is considered as the priority of the message. Additionally, we also add new priority-based arbitrators in on-chip network to support PPB cache coherence protocol. This mechanism in on-chip network can support effective cache access, which makes the on-chip network more efficient. Our analysis on an execution-driven full system simulator using SPLASH-2 benchmark shows that PPB cache coherence outperforms a MESI based directory, and the number of unnecessary transient states and stalling reduces up to 24%. Also it reported the speedup of 7.4%. Other advantages of this strategy are reduced delay of flits and significantly less energy consumption in on-chip network.

Coherence in the CMP ERA: Lesson learned in designing a LLC architecture

Designing an efficient memory system is a big challenge for future multicore systems. In particular, multicore systems increase the number of requests towards the memory systems, so the design of efficient on-chip caches is crucial to achieve adequate level of performance. Solutions based on conventional, big sized cache may be improved due to wire delay effects, so NUCA and D-NUCA cache may re...

Adding Token Counting to Directory-Based Cache Coherence

The coherence protocol is a first-order design concern in multicore designs. Directory protocols are naturally scalable, as they place no restrictions on the interconnect and have minimal bandwidth requirements; however, this scalability comes at the cost of increased sharing latency due to indirection. In contrast, broadcast-based systems such as snooping protocols and token coherence reduce l...

A Using Multicore Reuse Distance to Study Coherence Directories

Researchers have proposed numerous techniques to improve the scalability of coherence directories. The effectiveness of these techniques not only depends on application behavior, but also on the CPU’s configuration, e.g. its core count and cache size. As CPUs continue to scale, it is essential to explore the directory’s application and architecture dependences. However, this is challenging give...

Instruction-Level Execution Migration

We introduce the Execution Migration Machine (EM), a novel data-centric multicore memory system architecture based on computation migration. Unlike traditional distributed memory multicores, which rely on complex cache coherence protocols to move the data to the core where the computation is taking place, our scheme always moves the computation to the core where the data resides. By doing away ...
